Black Moon Lilith
Black Moon Lilith is the point in space where the Moon is farthest from Earth: an empty place, not a body. Astrologically it is the place in the chart that refuses to be tamed.
The astronomy
- The Moon's orbit is an ellipse with Earth at one focus. The far end of the ellipse is the apogee; the near end is the perigee.
- The line connecting them (the line of apsides) turns forward through the zodiac, completing a circle in about 8.85 years. Lilith spends about 9 months in each sign.
- The Sun's gravity constantly distorts the orbit, so "where the apogee is" has no single answer. That is why there are several Liliths.
- Some astrologers define the Black Moon as the empty second focus of the ellipse rather than the apogee. Seen from Earth, both lie in the same direction, so the zodiac position is the same.

Many astrologers read Mean Lilith as the archetype and Natural Lilith as how it actually shows up. Where they fall in different signs, both are considered in play.
The mythology
- Mesopotamia: the lilitu were wind and night spirits, feared as seducers and threats to newborns.
- The Hebrew Bible: Isaiah 34:14 mentions a lilit among the creatures haunting a ruined land, the only biblical appearance of the name.
- The Alphabet of Ben Sira (medieval, roughly 700 to 1000 CE): Lilith is Adam's first wife, made from the same earth. She refuses to lie beneath him, speaks the secret name of God, and flies from Eden. She will not return, even under threat.
- Kabbalah and the Zohar: she becomes the consort of Samael, queen of the demonic realm, the shadow side of the divine feminine.
- Modern revival: from the 1970s onward, feminist writers reclaimed her as the first woman to refuse submission.
Core meanings
- Refusal: where you will not submit, compromise or be domesticated.
- Exile: where you have been rejected, shamed or cast out, and where you learn to survive outside acceptance.
- Raw instinct and sexuality: desire that belongs to no one else, including taboo and forbidden desire.
- Rage: anger at injustice, especially suppressed feminine anger.
- The void: the emptiness that cannot be filled by anything outside yourself; the place of solitude and direct contact with the sacred.
- The shadow gift: what you have been punished for becomes your power once you stop hiding it.

Lilith returns
Lilith returns to its natal position about every 8.85 years: roughly ages 9, 18, 27, 35, 44, 53 and 62. These are often read as moments when suppressed parts of the self push back to the surface.
Priapus, the perigee
Priapus is the point where the Moon comes closest to Earth, the opposite end of Lilith's axis. Where Lilith withdraws into the void, Priapus presses into the body and the world.
The astronomy
- In the mean calculation, Priapus is always exactly opposite Mean Lilith.
- In reality the Moon's perigee is far more disturbed by the Sun than its apogee, so the Natural (interpolated) Priapus can sit up to about 25° away from true opposition.
- The Natural Lilith and Natural Priapus calculations by Dieter Koch and Bernhard Rindgen made Priapus usable as its own point, not just a mirror.
- A perigee that falls near a Full or New Moon produces the supermoons that fill the news: the Moon at its closest and brightest.
The mythology
- Priapus was a rustic Greek fertility god, in most accounts the son of Aphrodite and Dionysus.
- Hera, in jealousy, cursed him in the womb with an ugly body and an oversized, permanent erection. Rejected by the gods, he was raised by shepherds.
- He became guardian of gardens, orchards, vineyards, livestock and sailors. Statues of him stood in gardens to protect crops and ward off thieves and the evil eye.
- He is a figure of comedy and shame as much as fertility: the body's drives made grotesque, then made protective.

- Embodiment: instinct, appetite, lust, physical vitality and fertility.
- Compulsion: drives that feel stronger than will; what pulls you into the world.
- The shamed body: where bodily nature was mocked or cursed, and how it became protective strength.
- Temptation: some astrologers read Priapus as the point of outer temptation, and Lilith as the point of inner refusal.
- Abundance: the garden guardian; fertility of land, projects and body.
