A single birth moment holds far more than a Sun sign. Read in layers, from the visible sky inward, one chart can answer questions about temperament, timing, purpose, wounds, gifts, relationships and destiny.

Weaving the layers
- Repetition is the signal. A theme that appears in three or four independent layers is the core of the chart. If the nakshatra, the heliacal star and Chiron all speak of healing, healing is the thread of the life.
- Move from outer to inner. Start with what the sky shows plainly (layer 1) and move toward the subtle points. The subtle points refine; they should not overrule the obvious.
- Tight contacts over loose ones. With this many points, something will always touch something. Weight contacts within 1° heavily and let wider ones go.
- Fact first, meaning second. Confirm the positions; then weigh the interpretation as interpretation.
- Contradiction is information. A fiery Sun with a Sedna-heavy Moon is not an error; it describes a person who holds both.
Timing, relationships, places and the collective
The birth chart is the seed; everything else in astrology is about what the seed meets. Four families of technique extend it: time, other people, place, and the world.
Time: when things happen

Other people: relationships
- Synastry: two charts laid over each other; where one person's planets fall in the other's chart shows how they affect each other.
- Composite chart: the midpoints of both charts, read as the chart of the relationship itself.
- Davison chart: Ronald Davison's method, a real chart cast for the midpoint in time and space between two births.
- Draconitic synastry: one person's soul chart against the other's tropical or sidereal chart; read for karmic recognition.
- Vedic compatibility (Ashtakoota or Guna Milan): eight factors based on the two Moon nakshatras, scored out of 36 points, traditionally used for marriage.
- Navamsa comparison: matching the two soul-maturity charts.
- Asteroid bonds: Juno, Eros, Psyche, Amor, and name asteroids linking the two charts.
- Family patterns: comparing several generations' charts to see nodes, Chiron, Pholus and Nessus themes passed down.
Place: where things happen
- Astrocartography: developed by Jim Lewis in the 1970s, a world map showing where each planet was rising, setting, culminating and anti-culminating at the moment of birth. Living near a planet's line is read as intensifying that planet in one's life.
- Relocation chart: the birth moment recast for another place; the planets stay in their signs, but the houses and angles change.
- Local space: Michael Erlewine's technique, drawing each planet's compass direction from the birthplace; used for directions, rooms and travel.
- Latitude and the stars: because parans depend on latitude, moving north or south changes which fixed stars are bound to one's planets.
The world: the collective
- Ingress charts: the Sun's entry into the cardinal points, cast for a nation's capital, read for the season or year.
- Great conjunctions: Jupiter and Saturn meet about every 20 years, and their meetings shift element roughly every 200 years. The conjunction of December 2020 opened a new air series.
- Outer planet cycles: Uranus, Neptune and Pluto meetings are tied by mundane astrologers to revolutions, spiritual movements and the rise and fall of powers.
- National charts: the founding moments of nations and organizations, read like birth charts.
- The ages: precession's slow march from Pisces toward Aquarius.
The moment itself
- Electional astrology (muhurta in the Vedic tradition): choosing the best time to begin something: a marriage, a launch, a journey, a ritual. Moon phase, nakshatra and the ruler of the rising sign matter most.
- Horary (prashna in the Vedic tradition): answering a specific question from the chart of the moment it is sincerely asked.
- Personal research: keeping a dated record of real events and comparing them to the techniques above; the most honest way to see which methods speak to one's own life.
